Women in the Arts Foundation (WIA) works to overcome discrimination against women artists.
Formed in 1971, WIA has grown into a national organization. We have used our meetings, newsletter, educational programs, television interviews, speeches, pickets, and negotiations with museums, galleries, collectors, and government agencies to change outdated concepts and attitudes regarding women as professional artists.

WIA has created new ways to exhibit artwork and has addressed unfair jurying practices. We provide information to help women function effectively as professional artists. Studio visits and attending members' openings are ways in which we support one another's work. Our educational programs have included workshops on art colonies, business practices, art dealer and art critics, art history and aesthetics, law and loft law, grants, taxes, techniques and materials, art/health/occupational hazards, cataloguing and photographing artwork, and the NEA.

For many years WIA ran its own gallery on Broome Street in Manhattan, exhibiting the work of innumerable women artists, some of whom have gone on to illustrious careers. Countless women have gained valuable hands-on experience through their volunteer time with WIA.
WIA has obtained grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Exxon Corporation, Mobil Foundation, the Eastman Fund, and Consolidated Edison.

WIA is open to all women interested in the arts.
