Biography

I am a mature artist, trained and emergent from within the tradition of “gestural” early and mid-century Abstractionists, especially those in New York City. Enamored with colors, forms, and energies of the visual world, I’m often inspired by a simple found photograph or fragment showing interesting juxtapositions of form and color. I paint in acrylic or oil on medium to large sized canvases and paper, at times including linear, graphic elements. Totally abstract, my artwork is influenced by Mondrian, Hofmann, de Kooning, and Gorky.

Many changes occur before the structure and emotional content of an artwork is resolved for me. While I incorporate the spontaneous “improvisation” in the evolution of any given painting, my goal is always to achieve compositional integrity.

I hold an MFA in Painting from Columbia University and a BFA from Hunter College. I have received exhibition grants from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (1993 and 1994), Artists space (1980), and the Richmond County Savings Foundation (2002). My painting, “Mindscape R,” is in the Staten Island Museum’s permanent collection; my artist’s book, “Nested Pentabook,” is in the Museum of Modern Art, and my flag series is in the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. My paintings have appeared in over sixty group and nine solo exhibitions, including in Mikst Media Gallery in the Netherlands (2007) and BNP Paribas Espace Culturel in Nice, France (2008). I have curated nine group exhibits, including those for Chubb Insurance’s atrium Gallery and the corporate headquarters of Nabisco Brands.
